FAQ

I have recently been suffering from dizziness, vomiting, diarrhoea and muscle cramps is there a potential chance that I may be suffering from Addison’s disease?

Well to be honest it is quite difficult to answer this question without further information. It is important to note that Addison’s disease has many symptoms similar to other health conditions. Even though Addison’s disease is a very rare condition I wouldn’t advise you to ignore this situation. It is vital that you see your local general practitioner as soon as possible to share your concerns.

Is there a cure for the disease?

Unfortunately a cure has not yet been found. However many approaches have been taken to reduce (or eradicate) the symptoms associated with Addison’s disease these include oral corticosteroid drugs, (further details are discussed on the treatment section).

I have recently been diagnosed with Addison’s disease; will this affect my lifestyle or my life expectancy?

I am sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis. But try not to worry to much; fortunately Addison's disease can be strictly monitored through the use of medication, to ensure the disease does not affect your lifestyle. This inevitably stresses the importance for patients to persistently take their medications, as recommended by your doctor, failing to comply with these procedures could lead to further complications. Suffering from Addison’s disease should not have any bearings on your life expectancy however if you are suffering from adrenal crisis it is vital that you seek emergency help as soon as possible as this condition can be fatal in some circumstances.

My sister is suffering from Addison’s disease where can I find further information about this disease?

First of all I would strongly recommend you to see you local GP, as they will be able to directly address any of your major concerns and provide you with useful leaflets to seek further information. In addition, this site provides many links and references, which would also be useful for you to have a look at.

My father is suffering from Addison’s disease what is the likelihood of me suffering from this disease?

To be honest it depends on the underlying cause for the development of Addison’s disease. There has not been a direct genetic link associated with Addison’s disease. However there is a possibility that there is an association between individuals with a particular gene who are prone to develop autoimmune diseases and the development of Addison’s disease. However it should be noted that this theory still remains unclear.

How is Addison’s disease diagnosed?

Many approaches have been taken to diagnose Addison’s these include measurements of blood cortisol, Synacthen stimulation test, CHR Stimulation Test and Medical imaging for further information on this section please have a look at the diagnosis section provided in this site.
