ACTH (Adrenocorticotropic hormone)

  Also known as corticotropin, this is a polypeptide tropic hormone produced and secreted by the anterior pituitary gland. It is an important component of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and is often produced in response to biological stress.

Adrenalectomy

Surgical removal of one or both adrenal glands.

Adrenal cortex

Is the outer layer of the adrenal glands which secretes corticosteroids (for metabolic functions) and sex hormones.

Adrenal glands

A pair of small glands, located on top of each kidney. They produce several kinds of hormones, including the sex hormones and hormones that help control numerous functions such as; heart rate, blood pressure and hormones that control the way the body uses food.

AIDS (Acquired immune deficiency syndrome)

Is a disease of the immune system transmitted through blood products, especially by sexual contact or through contaminated needles.

Aldosterone

A hormone that increases the reabsorption of sodium and water and the release (secretion) of potassium in the kidneys.

Amyloidosis

Is a disorder characterized by deposits of amyloid in organs or tissues.

Cancer

Is a class of diseases, in which a group of cells display uncontrolled growth, invasion and sometimes metastasis.

Cortisol

Is a corticosteroid/glucocorticoid hormone and is formed by the zona fasciculate of the adrenal cortex. This hormone is associated with stress and anxiety.

Dehydroepiandrosterone

Is a weak androgenic steroid produced by the adrenal cortex.
